Spring SAVY 2018, Day 3- Ecological Expedition (1st/2nd)

Posted by on Monday, February 12, 2018 in Grade 1, Grade 2, SAVY.

Happy Third Day!

Today the students listened to a reading of The Great Kapok Tree by Lynn Cherry. They paid close attention to the interactions found within the text of the story. The students were divided into small groups based upon their understanding of the story. They created Literary Analysis Cubes to aid in their analysis of the story. The students examined different ways in which different story elements interacted by rolling their cubes and verbally explaining the various interactions.

The students were assigned one of the animals from the story and discussed: What were the effects of cutting down the tree, as reported by their particular animal? What are the long-term or future issues that would occur if their animal left or died? Next weekend the students will revisit the question: Should humans cut down trees for purposes of shelter or safety by reading about reasons for and against deforestation.

Sincerely,

Dr. P. 🙂
