Spring SAVY 2018, Day 3- Biophotonics (5th/6th)

Posted by on Monday, February 12, 2018 in Grade 5, Grade 6, SAVY.

This week, we finished compiling our optical toolboxes with the addition of fluorescence, scattering, Monte Carlo Simulations, and spectrometers. Students designed their own experiments to identify different fluorophores. Using different wavelengths of light, we were able to plot the excitation and emission spectra for quinine, Vitamin D, and rhodamine. As a major component of laser-tissue interactions, we had to explore light scattering. In particular, we focused on Raman scattering which can tell us what molecules are present within our samples and discussed its diagnostic value. Students also got to model light scattering and absorption in skin using Monte Carlo Simulations. To finish things off, we got see a spectrometer in action. Students were able to see how collected light can be separated according to wavelength for analysis. Next week, we will be applying our toolboxes to some clinical relevant challenges! Can’t wait to see you guys next week!
