Spring SAVY 2018, Day 1- Modified Organisms (3rd/4th)

Posted by on Monday, January 29, 2018 in Grade 3, Grade 4, SAVY.

Hello parents and students! We had a great first day. We learned all about basic microbiology and what it means to be a scientist, investigating characteristics and skills that make great researchers and investigators. We also had a great conversation about good bacteria and bad bacteria as well as some really interesting ones, including thermophilic bacteria that can live in temperatures near boiling! Some of these bacteria can be found in Yellowstone National Park and you can read more about them here: https://www.nps.gov/yell/learn/nature/thermophilic-bacteria.htm

As a class we sampled materials and items from outside that might contain microbes (including leaves, sticks, dirt, grass, etc.) and examined it under different magnifications to see what we could observe.
The pictures below show what each group saw, can you guess that object??

Great job on a successful first day.

See you next week!
