Fall SAVY 2017, Day 4- Disease Detectives: How Scientists Prevent Big Problems (3rd/4th)

Hello SAVY students and parents!

I can’t believe we’re already on week 4!! This week, we talked about Ebola. As scary as the disease can be, the students were troopers and were great at focusing on being the disease detectives that they’ve been training to be! We discussed the 2014 outbreak that started out in West Africa. We focused on the strategies that local, national, and international health organizations work together to control the spread of disease. Key topics discussed include contact tracing and case fatality rate.

The students were asked to go through a timeline of real events that occurred between 2013 and 2016 to look for patterns and strategies that were used by all of the countries affected. We ended the class with the students creating their best work yet- with a poster to spread awareness about Ebola and concept mapping. Next week our case will be a very different type of case than we’ve seen before! Stay Tuned!
