Fall SAVY 2017, Day 3- Genetic Engineering: The Science of Modified Organisms (5th/6th)

Posted by on Monday, October 9, 2017 in Grade 5, Grade 6, SAVY.

Hello Parents and Students!

We had a great week 3! We got back our results from the corn GMO project and turns out…squirrels just like corn! We had a couple samples that were uneaten and a couple samples where the bugs got to them first. Like most scientific experiments nothing ever work the way you think it will!

We wrapped up the day by completing our Bioengineering Virtual Lab. Students went through step by step to genetically modify E. coli and create a new organism that carried our red pigment (hint: dna donut = plasmid). Next week we will take these recombinant E. coli cells and streak them onto agar plates where we can see if the gene we inserted really worked!
Have a great week and see everyone back Saturday!

Josh
