Summer SAVY 2017, Session 6/Day 4- Beyond the Pyramids (Rising 1st)

Hello SAVY Parents!

I can’t believe tomorrow is our final day together in ancient Egypt. Just like any good trip, we don’t want to leave this destination, but we’re leaving plenty of learning undiscovered for other trips.

Today we began with at text explaining how the pyramids were built including some of the engineering tools and strategies the Egyptians used. We also constructed and discussed a two dimensional model pyramid that helped us to understand the organization of the labor system in our schools. Picture, if you will, a lone decision making principal at the top, a layer of teaching staff in the middle, and finally the broader base of hard working and valued students at the foundation. This was a great way for us to introduce and understand all the social, labor, political groups in ancient Egypt, and we worked to sort them in the same model structure, with a Pharaoh at the top. Maybe you can asked your child to fill in some of those others as they did in illustrations earlier today. We then worked to complete a greater systems diagram to understand the interactions of all these ancient people! What are the elements of a labor system. Can your child describe the inputs and outputs of the ancient Egyptian labor system? What are the benefits of this system and how are they different today?

After a snack (Mrs. Byrd tried hard to not eat all the items we’re assembling for our market display for you tomorrow!), we worked on another illustrative project explaining how we have observed some changes over time with human systems. We enjoyed another text that introduced us to the processes of making mummies. We can’t wait to learn more about that!

We hope you will be able to join us tomorrow morning so that we can show you and explain to you all the wonders that we have discovered about this marvelous civilization – and how this civilization’s systems have changed over time based on needs, resources, and circumstances.
