Summer SAVY 2017, Session 6/Day 3- Wildlife Ecology (Rising 6th/7th)

We excelled in several different ways in Wildlife Ecology today!

This morning we discussed the Lyme disease bacteria, Borrelia burgdorferi, works in an infected organism. We talked about how the spirochete moves through the circulatory system and how it evades the immune system by producing antigen proteins that “confuse” T-cells. We also discussed exponential growth of populations.
This afternoon we had the opportunity to visit one of Vanderbilt’s computer labs where we learned some skills using Excel data worksheets and graphing. Everyone
was really patient with the difficult processes and I thank you all very much! Last, we talked about laboratory methods of altering the genome of fruitflies, the importance of completing a treatment regime of antibiotics and the growth of human populations in different countries.

Thursday we’re going to study energy transfer in food webs and adaptations in natural selection. It’s going to be another great day in Wildlife Ecology, so everyone
get a good rest tonight!
