Summer SAVY 2017, Session 6/Day 2- Mystery and History (Rising 4th/5th)
Today the adventures have continued! The mystery that we focused on today was the Lost Colony of Roanoke.
We began class by brainstorming with the knowledge that many students already had and were willing to share, but we made a rule that we couldn’t talk about theories yet. For the rest of the morning, we focused on the story of putting together the project to set up the colony of Roanoke and then the two failed attempts to establish a permanent colony off the coast of modern North Carolina in the 1580s. Our detective historians kept track of the many different characters and groups who were part of the story with a chart, and they also kept track of events with a timeline.
After lunch, we turned our attention to the mystery that we were all so eager to discuss. The detective historians took out their detective notebooks and began organizing evidence and what they thought the evidence might mean. From there, they worked in groups on solving the mystery of what happened to the lost colonists for themselves and have made some fantastic posters to explain their theories.
On to more adventures in historical mysteries tomorrow!
