Summer SAVY 2017, Session 5/Day 3- Programming and Robotics (Rising 4th/5th)

Posted by on Wednesday, July 19, 2017 in SAVY.

We started the day by finishing the mazes we built with sphero yesterday. Students really brought their personalities through in the mazes, programming sphero to say funny or ironic things as it rolled through the maze! Before morning break, students had the opportunity to see each others’ mazes.

Then, we started to talk about variables. In programming, variables are placeholders that can store data. They help us keep track of data and make our programs more abstract.
In the afternoon, we tried out the concept of variables using sphero and scratch. In sphero, students created a fortune teller program that used a variable to store a random number. If they shake sphero, depending on the number, sphero will answer their questions with “yes,” “no,” or “maybe.” In scratch, students built off the mazes that they made yesterday to create games. Students used variables to create timers or allow users to earn points.
Tomorrow, we will get more practice with variables, then start learning about functions!
