Summer SAVY 2017, Session 5/Day 2- Computational Astrophysics (Rising 6th/7th)

Posted by on Tuesday, July 18, 2017 in SAVY.

On day 2 of Computational Astrophysics, the students worked on a lot of pieces of code! We made several steps in understanding how objects move through space. We tied together the concepts of position, velocity, and acceleration in order to describe how an object moves. We then discussed the concepts of forces in order to describe why an object moves. But we did way more than discuss these concepts – we used high school and college level mathematics to turn our descriptions into computer code where we could see how objects respond to forces! I can tell all the students are eager to get their Solar Systems working. So many of them have already started to create their model with very accurate detail! We’ve been building up high-level mathematical, physical, and programming knowledge that can be used to describe not only our Solar System, but every astronomical system in our Universe! Tomorrow we’ll put together some of the final pieces that we need in order to make a Solar System!
