Summer SAVY 2017, Session 4/Day 4- Dive into Design (Rising 1st)

Posted by on Thursday, July 13, 2017 in SAVY.

Dear Parents,

Today was a fabulous fourth day for our Dive into Design class! We began our morning reading from the book, Rosie Revere, Engineer. We then talked more about the engineering process and how much we learn from our mistakes and projects that don’t go the way we intended them to go in our designs and plans.

Next, we spent all morning in rotations full of measurement opportunities. Students worked on their swimming pool models by applying learning from their centers. Centers included how to partition and divide a whole into equal parts. This was an extension from yesterday’s learning. Students then measured their pool models and divided their pools to have equidistant swimming lanes placed in their pools. In another center, students were challenged to come up with their own definition of perimeter after analyzing a model that I drew on the whiteboard. Students then practiced finding perimeters of quadrilaterals as well as multi-sided shapes. Once students measured all sides, and recorded their measurements, they got to use a calculator to figure their perimeter. After students showed that they understood perimeter, they figured the perimeter of their pool model surface.

Finally, students tackled another logic challenge and another brainstorming activity. I can’t believe that tomorrow is our last day! I am already, sad because I have enjoyed this wonderful and talented class immensely! Open House is tomorrow, (Friday), between 9:15-9:45. You will find us in Murray, 3rd floor. Siblings, friends and relatives are welcome! We still have lots of learning fun to have tomorrow after the Open House, so we are hoping your child can stay for the remainder of the class time. I look forward to meeting you all, and seeing the sparkles in your child’s eyes as they tell you about their week at SAVY’s Dive into Design.
