Summer SAVY 2017, Session 4/Day 4- Business Basics (Rising 4th/5th)

Posted by on Thursday, July 13, 2017 in SAVY.

Students learned today about how supply and demand affect the stock market. We thought about how to approach selecting a stock and then considered whether or not it is even possible to consistently select above average stocks. The students then heard about the efficient markets hypothesis and developed reasons for and against the hypothesis.

Hard to believe that tomorrow is already Friday. That means our main project is coming to a close. Students worked diligently this morning on their stock proposals for tomorrow. They seem like they are ready to provide sound investment advice to the board of trustees (Katy and me) tomorrow.

The class market continued today and students now are almost to the point of having full information available to them. Trading is picking up speed as information is easier to access. We’ll see if we can hit Wall Street pace tomorrow!

Most importantly we talked about the ethics of investing. Would you invest in a company that you think is doing something morally questionable? Would you invest in a company that provides people with health hazards? The student perspectives on these issues were fantastic.

I can’t wait to see the students’ finished presentations tomorrow.
