Summer SAVY 2017, Session 3/Day 3- Science of the Sea (Rising 2nd/3rd)

Posted by on Wednesday, June 28, 2017 in SAVY.

We had a busy morning in Science of the Sea! We continued learning about phylogeny and how organisms are related to one another using evolutionary biology techniques. I think the students understand how diverse life is under the sea and though we can’t discuss every single species of marine life, we learned how many different species there are of each major Phylum of marine organisms.

In the second half of class we switched gears and learned about the ocean zones and what type of life live in the different zones. The students created “Oceans in a Jar” showing the layers of the ocean which mimic the actual viscosity of the water at those layers! Hopefully the students’ jars made it home without getting mixed up too much. Tomorrow we are going to spend the day reviewing the concepts we have learned so far and doing a (somewhat) surprise dissection!
