Summer SAVY 2017, Session 3/Day 2- Science of the Sea (Rising 2nd/3rd)

Posted by on Tuesday, June 27, 2017 in SAVY.

We started off our day in Science of the Sea with a trip to tour a lab at Vanderbilt. The lab of Dr. James Patton studies Zebrafish, a model organism for studying embryonic development and regeneration. The lab has hundreds of fish tanks with various transgenic Zebrafish including some albino Zebrafish and some fluorescent Zebrafish. We also saw some embryos developing and were able to take them back to our classroom to watch over the rest of the week!

After the lab tour we discussed classification and sharing genetic traits with our family members. Scientists classify all organisms using a very complex system and study how organisms relate to each other genetically using Phylogeny. We are going to try our hand at classifying marine organisms and learning how they are related.
