Summer SAVY 2017, Session 3/Day 2- Mirror of Mythology (Rising 2nd/3rd, Rhoads)

Posted by on Tuesday, June 27, 2017 in SAVY.

Today we looked at how ancient Greek society was influenced by Greek mythology and vice versa. Ancient Greece was a warring and male-dominated society. This is reflected, and in ways justified, by Greek Mythology.

Many of the students were upset with the gender inequality of ancient Greece, but this was a great teachable moment to encourage them to continue asking questions in order to understand why cultures behaved in certain ways.

We then related the Greek myth of Uranus casting out his sons Cyclops and Hecatoncheires with the birth of his grandson Zeus to explain the ancient Greek way of life.

We are developing our scholarly skills this week, and a big part of scholarship is asking questions. Don’t be afraid to follow up with your children on what questions they are developing and be sure to help them find their own answers through research and talking to you.
