Summer SAVY 2017, Session 3/Day 1- Budding Botanist (Rising 1st)

Posted by on Monday, June 26, 2017 in SAVY.

Thank you for sharing your botanist with us. We are looking forward to a wonderful week discovering the plant world together. We began our lab time today considering the traits and procedures of a scientist. With lab coats on, we began observing various plants .We each built an individual terrarium! With terrariums in hand, we began discussing the components of a system. System is the overarching concept we will be studying, as we study content about plants.
We’re beginning our week together looking at many types of seeds. With magnifying glasses in hand, we examined pinto bean, sunflower seeds, and lima bean seeds that have begun to germinate. Your botanists were quick to spot the cotyledon, seed coat, and embryo. We enjoyed several books about seeds, and used our observation skills to look at a sunflower, and to see the many products that come from these flowers. We watched time-lapse videos of lima bean and sunflower seeds germinating and becoming adult plants. Fascinating!
During our week together, we will dissect flowers and we will do many comparisons of various plants and stretch our critical thinking skills to consider some of the interconnectedness of the plant world. Wednesday, your botanist will tour the Vanderbilt Greenhouse and the professor will show us many unique plants and tell us about their adaptations. I’m really looking forward to our week together exploring the plant world.
