Summer SAVY 2017, Session 2/Day 4- Me, Myself, and the Monomyth (Rising 6th/7th)

Structuralism has many detractors because it is a theory that is difficult to apply universally. Nonetheless, we used our time today to apply the monomyth to difficult stories in an effort to understand its limitations.

We also read criticism pointing out the shortcomings of the theory as well as fiction that does not completely fit the theory in an effort to understand the pros and cons of this critical tool.

Over dinner, ask your child what it means to use criticism to help them understand a story. You’ll be interested in how structuralism has affected their answers.
