Summer SAVY 2017, Session 2/Day 3- Robotic Programming (Rising 2nd/3rd)

Greetings!

Today was great! We started with an engineering meeting and talked about what worked with our programming, and then what didn’t work. The kids shared strategies for things that they did when they hit a wall, and we talked about strategies to deal with frustration. I then shared with them some problems that professional programmers face and that all programmers are faced with challenges, no matter how good they are! With that, we tackled the programs that had eluded us the day before.

I am so happy to report that everyone was able to conquer the programs that were tripping them up the day before, and they were ecstatic! There were lots of high fives, laughter, and giant smiles as they solved their nemeses from yesterday and were able to move on! They started programming their Sphero and learned how to use the commands and program choices. They really had so much fun commanding them to speak, change colors, and move around! They were amazed when time was up!

Their homework is to think about what they would like to program their Sphero to do. Now that they have the basics down, they are piecing together code and figuring out what they want to accomplish. I did have several ask about Tynker, and we are only on that for a little bit because it gives them a good basis to start writing code. They are welcome to download it on their own and “play” the other challenges and learn more. That would be amazing!

I am so proud of their perseverance and focus. They really did a great job and were so excited with their success! I can hardly wait to see what they accomplish tomorrow!

Have a great night!
