Summer SAVY 2017, Session 2/Day 3- Me, Myself, and the Monomyth (Rising 6th/7th)

Posted by on Wednesday, June 21, 2017 in SAVY.

We put structuralism to the test today as we used the theory of the monomyth to help us understand a difficult text.

James Joyce is notoriously difficult to read so we used the Hero’s Journey to help us understand and interpret the protagonist’s actions in “Araby.”
We continued the afternoon by viewing a segment of Star Wars.  George Lucas has gone on record stating that the structuralist work of Joseph Campbell inspired his film and we examined how Lucas both follows and subverts the hero’s journey with Star Wars.
Over dinner, try asking your children to come up with other stories that both flow and subvert heroic ideals.
