Summer SAVY 2017, Session 2/Day 1- Robotic Programming (Rising 2nd/3rd)

Greetings!

We had such a busy and fun day today!  We started with some “getting to know you” activities.  It was great to get to know the kids better and for them to see what they have in common!

Next, we went over the engineering process and how that can be a complicated process.  We have a copy of it that will remain on the wall as we try to work on our coding to remind us that it is complicated and it is OKAY to make mistakes – in fact, we expect it!  Even Pokemon Go had to take all of their gyms down today to redo them because there was a programming error, and that is one of the largest apps in the world right now!  After we went over that,  we began programming using Tynker as a programming tool.  It allows the students to program a virtual Sphero and begin to explore the drag and drop principle.  After 10 minutes of exploration, we had an engineering meeting to go over some of the obstacles they encountered.  These are great teachable moments!  The kids learned about the degrees of a circle, because they have to make turns and program the degrees.  They learned that 360 degrees is all the way around, 90 degrees if 1/4 of the way around, and 180 degrees is halfway around.  We even played a game like Simon Says to practice the turns!

Finally, it was time for the best part.  They got to use their Spheros and learn how to log in, how to change the colors, drive them, and troubleshoot any obstacles that they had.  They did a great job and had so much fun that they couldn’t believe it was time to go!  I am looking forward to continuing tomorrow!

Have a great night!
