Summer SAVY 2017, Session 1/Day 4- Mirror of Mythology (Rising 2nd/3rd, Dr. Mall)

Posted by on Thursday, June 15, 2017 in SAVY.

Greetings!  Today was a wonderful day!  The students were so excited to share their examples mythology around us.  They noticed everything from Trident gum and Mobil Oil to Pandora Jewelry and radio and the achilles tendon and heel!  We even looked up some logos (FTD is Mercury, etc) and they were able to identify the inspiration for each!
We then moved on to monsters and heroes.  The students brainstormed the characteristics of monsters, and decided that we should also include mythical creatures as a title.  There were several new ones for them, and they were also excited to realize that different cultures shared similar monsters, such as dragons and the sphinx.
This was incorporated into a study  of heroes, and we charted the common characteristics and explored the stories of Theseus, Jason, and Perseus.  We ended the day by creating original monsters that they described and illustrated, and then the students created myths of their own.  It was so much fun!
i look forward to sharing these with you tomorrow!  Don’t forget that tomorrow is the open house, and it is a great opportunity to see what they have learned!  I am looking forward to meeting you.  Your kids are absolutely amazing and are just great kids!
Have a great night!
