Summer SAVY 2017, Session 1/Day 3- Industrial Microbiology (Rising 4th/5th)

Posted by on Wednesday, June 14, 2017 in SAVY.

We had bacterial filled  Wednesday!

And yes that is a good thing….
We started the day by playing our favorite game where the OZ team faced off the mad scientists (lol ask the students). From here we spent the day discussing genetic manipulations and how bacteria are isolated. Students made their own bacterial petri dishes by taking samples from around the room. We also tested our skin, door handles, carpet, windows and pretty much anything else we could think of. Tomorrow we will see all the types of microorganisms that grew! muahahah
We started our Microbe Hunt Challenge, where students designed their own product made from bacterial gene expression. Students sampled environmental areas where these genes could be found and devised a plan on how to profit from such discoveries. Money money money!
Below are some pictures of the petri dishes filled with nutrient agar (jello pretty much) and group posters from the Microbe Hunt.
See you guys tomorrow! Be ready for smelly fermentation…you will find out 😉
