Fall SAVY 2016 (Day 1) – Where’s the Beach?
Happy First Day!
Saturday marked the launch of our “Where’s the Beach?” unit with 1st and 2nd grade students. We began with a pre-assessment concept map of beach erosion. Students went on to uncover 5 treasures and connect them to clues that relate to our sessions with a Sand Pail Scavenger Hunt. In our quest to answer the question, “Is the beach a system?”, we explored the components of systems using a flashlight and toy cars as examples. Students brainstormed the elements, inputs, outputs, boundaries, and interactions of those particular systems and teams generated lists of other systems. We also discussed what happens when a system becomes dysfunctional. After exploring the generalizations of systems, we concluded that the beach was indeed a system. It was exciting to see the students’ prior knowledge being shared and their enthusiasm for our future explorations in weathering and erosion! You can build on their learning by observing and discussing the various systems that can be seen in our daily lives. Next week, we will identify the U.S. coastlines and discover potential problems that erosion plays on building along them.
