Fall SAVY 2016 (Day 1) – Media Mania!

Posted by on Monday, September 26, 2016 in Grade 3, Grade 4, SAVY.

Dear Media Mania parents,

We had a wonderful first day exploring media as a class!

We gave the class a quick introduction into how they might use the scientific method to understand how media can impact behavior. It is clear that each student is coming in with a good understanding of how to engage in basic science. We are very excited to build on that knowledge!

Next, the students worked alone or in groups to develop a new type of media. We were very impressed by the creativity and thoughtfulness everyone put into their products. The goal was to get the class thinking about the purposes and consequences of media. Next week we will use the products designed in class to think critically about the consequences of media and determine how we can measure those outcomes like social scientists.

To get everyone in a behavioral science mindset, we ended the day by handing out journals in which all of our students will write down their thoughts, questions, and keep track of their ideas as the course develops. Their optional “homework” for this week is to think critically about the prompt on the second page. We ask that you share this with your student and remind them to think about the following:

  • What is the problem at hand?
  • What do we think it is the cause?
  • How can we test to see if we are right?

We look forward to seeing everyone next week!

Your instructors,

Emily and Israel
