Summer SAVY 2016 (Session 5, Day 3) – Marvelous Molecules (Dr. Zeiger)

Posted by on Wednesday, July 27, 2016 in Grade 1, Grade 2, SAVY.

Electrons were bonding and mixing it up today in class.  We found out the difference between elements, compounds, and mixtures.   Elements including plutonium can be found on the Periodic Table of Elements while compounds consist of elements bonded together.  Students learned how the electrons in atoms help to create these bonds. The students went on to decipher chemical formulas including understanding chemical symbols and determining the number of atoms of each element in a compound.

Class continued as we learned about the power of protons or specifically hydrogen’s protons. Students learned about pH and how litmus paper can be used to indicate if something is an acid or base. We experimented with everyday household items including lemon juice, laundry detergent, water, and vinegar to see which ones are acids or bases.

See you tomorrow morning!
