Summer SAVY 2016 (Session 5, Day 3) – Beyond the Pyramids: Egyptian Explorations

Posted by on Wednesday, July 27, 2016 in Grade K, SAVY.

Dear Parents,

Today we were able to talk more about languages, specifically we reasoned about the issues of different languages facing extinction today.  We discussed a story by observing the evidence of the problem in the story, considering the different points of view of stakeholders, and then concluding the implications/consequences of this problem.  The students were very engaged and thoughtful that languages, much like animal species, could be wiped from our planet.  The most challenging part of our day was examining a simple persuasive writing story to identify and sort out the introduction, 3 reasons reason statements, and the conclusion.  Phew!  Hard work.  Finally, we also learned about the number system of ancient Egypt by reading the story, Senefer – A Young Genius in Old Egypt, by Beatrice Lumpkin.  You can reinforce you child’s learning by asking them to write 2 and 3 digit numbers in ancient Egyptian (they may even be able to add 2 digit numbers with regrouping using this system)!

Tomorrow we will enjoy a sensory experience in a story while examining farm produce, textiles, and even consider an ancient Egyptian pillow – spoiler alert, it wasn’t very soft!  We’ll be building pyramids and will have many other learning adventures as well.  Hope to see you on Friday for our Open House at 9:00am.
