Summer SAVY 2016 (Session 5, Day 2) – Marvelous Molecules (Dr. Zeiger)

Posted by on Tuesday, July 26, 2016 in Grade 1, Grade 2, SAVY.

Todays class was all about atoms and meeting “numero uno”, otherwise known as hydrogen. Students learned about the positive proton, negative electron, and neutral neutron. Ask them to demonstrate an atom! We learned how Neil Bohr 100 years ago theorized that electrons move in stationary orbits and how scientists thru the years have figured out more and more about the atom thru the field of quantum physics. We also met the periodic table of elements.

The last part of class was about how atoms interact with one another. We wiggled and whizzed around the room modeling how atoms behave in different phases. Using our new knowledge, we then created a new substance called oobleck and found out that things don’t always follow the rules. Ask your scientist to tell you about this “oobleck” and its phase of liquid or solid.

Have a great Tuesday!
