Summer SAVY 2016 (Session 5, Day 2) – Culinary Chemistry (Dr. Lapointe)
Today in Culinary Chemistry we learned all about how our bodies use carbohydrates to make energy in the form of ATP! The students impressed me with their knowledge of cells and mitochondria. We took on the role of “doctor” and diagnosed a patient who was deficient in an enzyme that is part of glycolysis! In the afternoon we changed direction a little bit and talked about lipids (fats) in our food. The students did an experiment where they extracted lipid from common foods like potato chips and chocolate chips using acetone and we are waiting to see our results tomorrow morning! Tomorrow it’s on to proteins, vitamins, and minerals!
