Summer SAVY 2016 (Session 5, Day 1) – Culinary Chemistry (Dr. Lapointe)

Posted by on Monday, July 25, 2016 in Grade 3, Grade 4, SAVY.

We had such a fun day today! First, we learned about the history of the food industry (technology, scientists who played a big role, and even legislation that has been passed this year). The students put together a timeline that dated back to 10,000 BC when we first domesticated plants and animals! Then, we learned about the basics of chemistry and built some models of atoms with protons, neutrons, and electrons. At the end of the day we transitioned to learning about molecules and started talking about biomolecules that we find in our food. Day 1 we learned about all types of carbohydrates and the students tested different foods for the presence of starch (polysaccharide) and sugars (monosaccharides). Quiz your kids to see if they remember the difference! Tomorrow we will learn more about carbohydrates and start on lipids!
