Summer SAVY 2016 (Session 4AM, Day 2) – Budding Botanist

Posted by on Tuesday, July 12, 2016 in Grade K, SAVY.

Greetings!

Today, we read a Magic School Bus book about plants.  Through the literature, the students learned about pollen, flowers, the role of bees in pollination, and were introduced to seed germination.  We also talked about different forms of seeds and how some can be very large and some are very small.  They also discussed seed coats and how they help protect the seeds.  We then performed an experiment in which students placed soaked lima beans in Ziploc bags with a wet paper towel and placed them in the window.  They hypothesized that they will grow but are a little skeptical!   We will be checking the results daily.

We also started a journal and the students will be writing in them daily.  Today, they drew the parts of a seed and wrote about what each part does.  They then dissected a bean  and taped down the parts that they had identified so that they have an actual version of the parts and s created version.  We then watched a Brainpop educational video about plants and how they grow.  They love watching those information packed shorts! We then took the online quiz and the students got every answer correct.  They even chose the hard version of the quiz and still aced it!

Tomorrow, we will look at any progress the seeds have made, learn more about germination and what plants need to grow, and we will then learn the parts of a plant. They will also learn why those parts are so important.  We will also start learning about adaptations.   I have some fun activities planned for it, so it will be a fun day!

Have a great night!
