Summer SAVY 2016 (Session 1, Day 1) – The Power of Poetry
Poetic forms can be especially challenging, but they can also result in great creative writing. Poetry is all about expressing feelings and emotions and poetic forms can serve as a mold to help structure these ideas.
The Oulipian writers from France recognize the value of pushing one’s writing and recognize how Writing against constraints (even arbitrary ones) can result in stellar poetry.
Today we tried Oulipian constraints such as the snowball poem–a poem where each line is one letter longer than the previous–, the lipogram (omits words using E’s or another preselected letter), and the S+7 which takes a pre-existing poem and swaps each word for the seventh word following it in the dictionary.
The results exceeded our expectations!
