Summer SAVY 2016 (Session 3, Day 4) – The Power of Poetry

Posted by on Thursday, June 30, 2016 in Grade 3, Grade 4, SAVY.

It’s important to think in new and unique ways when writing poetry. We nurtured this need by playing the board game Codenames which requires players to come up with clues to direct their teams to pick a specific word out from a set of cards.

We then took these same two-sided cards and wrote poems that connected the two unrelated words printed on them.

Next we read poetry by Walt Whitman and Dorothea Lasky and we had a group discussion and debate on their meanings. We reached the indefinite conclusion that a poem’s meaning can vary from person to person, but this is okay.

We finished the day by writing a poem about ourselves that uses metaphor to describe our experiences and by sharing some of the poems we are most proud of from the week.
