Summer SAVY 2016 (Session 3, Day 3) – Linguistics in Your Life

Posted by on Wednesday, June 29, 2016 in Grade 5, Grade 6, SAVY.

Today we continued to learn about phonology, particularly the ways that we pronounce different words and phrases together. Later in the morning we got into groups and began to think about Future English–how English will sound in 500 years. Each group came up with their own scenario for what happens to English-speakers in the future and started to think about how that might cause the language to change. We also practiced transcribing with the IPA. After lunch, we had a Mystery Hunt wherein students worked in teams to “decode” clues transcribed in IPA in order to find additional clues, and so forth. Everyone had a great time with that activity. We finished out our day by thinking more about the phonemes used in Future English. If students would like to explore further, they can visit this link, and click the links to hear the various sounds: http://www.internationalphoneticalphabet.org/ipa-sounds/ipa-chart-with-sounds/

Tomorrow we’ll be changing our focus to morphology (words and word bits).
