Summer SAVY 2016 (Session 3, Day 2) – Dive into Design

Posted by on Tuesday, June 28, 2016 in Grade K, SAVY.

Dear Parents:

We had another wonderful day today in Dive Into Design! We began our day with a learning discussion on volume by using an aquarium to demonstrate space filled up with water. We discussed how to find the volume, and we led students to discover why it makes sense. We also did a quick check to make sure students remembered what length, width and height were. After that, we talked about using our rulers to measure and how inches “fit” into a yard stick. Next, students set off to measure objects around the floor and classroom. We discussed choosing the right measuring instruments to measure specific objects.

Next, students saw how an in-ground swimming pool is made. Students enjoyed the elapsed time video as they marveled at how many steps it took to build a pool, and how accurate their measurements had to be. After that, students began their own swimming pool models. We discussed the concepts of area and perimeter (we will extend this learning throughout the week). The students planned the location for their pool, and their fence and bushes. Tomorrow we will continue to work on our models.

More to measure with immeasurable learning, tomorrow!
