Summer SAVY 2016 (Session 3, Day 1) – Modeling Motion

Posted by on Monday, June 27, 2016 in Grade 1, Grade 2, SAVY.

Dear parents and families,

It was a great day in Modeling Motion!  We began with a deep investigation of the motion of a few Lego NXT Robots, programmed to move differently.  Students described the motion of their robot, and others tried to imitate how their robot must have moved, with their bodies.  We gradually began to quantify aspects of motion (e.g.: time, distance between positions)  to produce better descriptions. Students eventually came to use speed as a rate, and we clarified that speed expresses a change in distance in a change in time. Each group found the speed of their robot in inches per second. We defined “faster” as moving a greater distance in the same amount of time.  Tomorrow, we will further describe the motion of the robots and build our first computational models of (constant speed) motion.

I am very much looking forward to continuing to learn with your scholars this week!

Amy
