Summer SAVY 2016 (Session 2, Day 4) – It’s Elemental

Posted by on Thursday, June 23, 2016 in Grade 1, Grade 2, SAVY.

It’s Elemental was very exciting today. We started by reviewing the information we have learned so far. In the last few days we have focused on elements and elemental properties. Today we concentrated on how elements form bonds in molecules. We learnt the difference between ionic and covalent bonds. We used the trends observed in the periodic table to determine which type of bond would form between two elements. Then we did an activity to determine how many atoms of an elements would be present in ionic molecules. Basically, we learnt why water is called H2O. After learning how bonds between atoms form we investigated physically methods for determining if a chemical reaction is occurring. We mixed together several chemicals and made observations to determine what type of changes indicate a chemical reaction. Together as a class we made great observations such as color changes, temperature decreases, fizzing sounds, and gas formation. At the end of the day each student got to “adopt an element” where they focused on one element and determined information based on the periodic table and an information sheet. Tomorrow we are excited to show you our week’s work during open house and then we will be visiting a chemistry lab at Vanderbilt University.
