Summer SAVY 2016 (Session 2, Day 2) – Looking into Language

Posted by on Tuesday, June 21, 2016 in Grade 3, Grade 4, SAVY.

Today we continued with our linguistics training by learning about phonology, the study of speech sounds and how they are made. Our main activity involved learning to use the international phonetic alphabet (IPA) in order to transcribe speech. We went over all of the IPA symbols used in English and practiced reading IPA transcriptions. We engaged in several activities that helped us to remember what the various symbols mean. We are gearing up for our Mystery Race tomorrow morning, for which the students will need to know the IPA well.
