Summer SAVY, Session 5 Day 3, “The Making of America: Rebellion, Revolt, and Resolution” (3rd-4th)

Hello, Families!  It’s been TOURNAMENT and REVOLUTIONARY WAR BATTLE PROJECT Day!

After a brief review of a very content-heavy Tuesday, we jumped right into a lesson on the 13 Colonies… but with a twist.  We had a “March Madness” style tournament where the students had to determine which colony was the “Weirdest”.  The students had to read information about the start of every colony and then compare one colony to another and give a rationale as to why one colony was “weirder” than the other. They repeated this 6 times in the first round, and then the winners advanced. The “weirdest” designation went to Georgia! Ask your young historian to explain why Georgia won this honor.

Due to storms, we had ORA in the classroom where students played several games and engaged in a Bald Eagle drawing activity. I was impressed with their drawings!

After lunch, we had a short lesson on Lexington & Concord and the start of the war. Ask your student if they know what “One if by land, two if by sea” means. We then split up into 3 collaborative groups. Group members researched specific battles according to location. They then created a poster presentation to share with the class. The three groups are: The Northern Colonies, The Middle Colonies, and The Southern Colonies. Apart from their research, this is an exercise in working in a group and following written directions.

Again, what a fun day with a great group of young historians!
