Summer SAVY, Session 3 Day 5, “Percy Jackson & Greek Mythology” (3rd-4th)
Happy Friday! I am so sad to see this week come to an end. We had a great time and learned so much about Percy Jackson, Greek Mythology, and myths in general. We started our day by painting the pottery made yesterday. We looked at some common patterns that the ancient Greeks used to use on their pots and then began our own work!
After we finished cleaning up our painting, we started working on our final research project. Students were able to choose between Roman, Egyptian, or Norse mythology to do some research on and create a poster. They had to answer 3 questions on their posters: What does your chosen mythology have in common with Greek mythology? What is different from Greek mythology? Why do you think cultures have differences in their mythology? This week, we’ve become experts in Greek mythology, so applying what we’ve learned by comparing it to another type of mythology was a great way for students to test their knowledge and think more deeply about the reasons behind the differences. Every group had to present their posters in front of the class. Ask them about this project and what they learned about their chosen mythology!
Our research projects took up the entire morning, so fast forward to the afternoon – after lunch, we jumped into an exciting escape room activity! Students were challenged to find the lost city of Atlantis by solving puzzles related to Greek mythology and Percy Jackson. They completed matching activities, unscrambled words, and answered bonus questions along the way. It was such a fun and interactive way to wrap up our week, and it gave everyone a chance to collaborate with the new friends they’ve made!
