Summer SAVY, Session 2 Day 2, Timeless Tales: Archetypes All Around Us (3rd-4th)

Posted by on Tuesday, June 17, 2025 in blog, SAVY.

Wow, what a day! Today was an amazing continuation of yesterday’s learning and diving even deeper into our understanding of archetypes. We started our morning by taking personality tests and then discussing which archetypes our personalities would most likely fit into. We have a lot of leaders in this room! This allowed them to think about archetypes in a new way and really solidify their understanding of them.

Next, we went on a book scavenger hunt! Students broke up into groups and were tasked with reading multiple books and figuring out which character and situational archetypes were found in those stories. They moved around to 3 different stations with their groups and had multiple books to read and take notes on. Some groups read together, while some groups chose to divide and conquer to read more of the books in the allotted time. After each group went around the room, they shared with the other groups which archetypes they found in the stories.

After ORA, our class spent some time talking about the positive and negative attributes of some of the archetypes. They worked in pairs to discuss and take notes on the good and bad of archetypes such as the innocent, the sage, the hero, and the everyman. We also came up with some more examples of each of the archetypes in literature, movies, or even real life.

We had a great lunch break and then got right back to work! Our afternoon was spent focusing on the hero’s journey. We watched a TedEd video describing the making of a hero and took notes on the hero’s journey. We thought about and discussed stories we already know that take the main character on a hero’s journey- Harry Potter and Hercules were two big ones. We also watched a Pixar short called “Piper” and took notes on the steps of the journey that the tiny bird goes on throughout the short.

To end our day, the students became comic strip authors! They had to think about a time in their life when they went through a hero’s journey or a story they’ve encountered that had the hero’s journey, and create a comic strip showing the journey. Each box in the comic represents a step on the journey. Most students chose to do their own hero’s journey, so be sure to ask them what they chose to create! I can’t wait to continue learning and digging deeper on day 3 tomorrow!!
