SAVY 2019: Session 6, Day 2 – The Great Debate (Rising 3rd/4th)
What a fantastic second day! We spent the morning analyzing primary source writing from multiple perspectives about “How Americans Should Treat the Land?”. The analysis included a scavenger hunt where her students were to find as much evidence as they could where the author used the rhetorical devices of ethos, pathos, and logos. Because the students were working in groups, they were able to discuss how evidence from the text could be evidence for multiple rhetorical devices. We then used the evidence they gathered to begin creating a concept map that will be used and added to during the remainder of the week. We used the same primary resources to create a Reasoning About a Situation chart. I am so impressed with the level of thinking exhibited by the students!! It is evident that they are internalizing the information and are able to apply what they learned in an abstract way. The students were also given more time to research their issue in preparation for Friday’s debate. There was so much excitement today during our activities! They really enjoyed being given a difficult task and working through it together. I am so excited to have more practice tomorrow!!
