SAVY 2019: Session 5, Day 5 – Dabbling with DNA
On this last day of camp, we finished the GMO research that was started yesterday and teams prepared their reports. After lunch, each team presented their report to the class. It was an opportunity to practice conveying information to a (friendly) audience. They did a great job! We then talked about the mechanics of gel electrophoresis and practiced loading faux DNA onto gels using micropipettes. The students learned the proper technique for pipetting and discovered that if you release the plunger while it’s still in the buffer it will suck the DNA back up. It takes time to perfect the technique.
I enjoyed working with your children and learned a lot about working with elementary age students. It’s a challenge and thank goodness for elementary school teachers! Have a good rest of your summer.
