SAVY 2019: Session 5, Day 4 – Dynamic Coasts (Rising 5th/6th)
In the morning we learned more about coastal hazards like ocean acidification, hurricanes, tsunamis, and oil spills. Students worked in groups to research and develop presentations on one of these topics. They shared their findings to the rest of the class. After lunch, we learned about radioactive decay and how scientists use radiometric dating (like carbon dating) to understand coastal change. We conducted an experiment to model decay of the parent isotope and formation of the daughter isotope.
Some students were excited to learn about hurricanes. This website (https://coast.noaa.gov/hurricanes/) allows you to explore different regions or cities and the storms that have affected them. You can explore not only their trajectory, but also wind speed, pressures, and storm strength.
We are looking forward to the open house tomorrow! We learned a lot this week and are excited to showcase the fun activities and labs we did in class.
