Summer SAVY 2018: Session 4, Day 2 – Adventures in Algebra (Rising 2nd)
Happy Second Day!
Today the mathematicians differentiated between expressions and equations by explaining their similarities and differences. They are beginning to understand that expressions involve numbers, operations, and/or variables. However, equations show how two expressions are equal to one another. They were introduced to hands-on equation which is a fun and easy way for our young mathematicians to learn basic algebra. They were able to use visual and kinesthetic strategies to demystify abstract algebraic concepts. I could see their self-esteem and interest enhance throughout the morning.
My teaching assistant, Ms. AJ, helped to divide the future store owners into partners so they could begin to brainstorm items to be sold in their stores. They worked with their partners to create names for their stores and to decide on ten items to be sold in their shops. They are excited about helping the Children’s Hospital generate money for the addition of new artwork.
Sincerely,
Dr. P. (:
