Summer SAVY 2016 (Session 4AM/PM, Day 8) – The Science of Complexity

Posted by on Wednesday, July 20, 2016 in Grade 1, Grade 2, SAVY.

Today we learned about how genes in a population can change over time through a process of natural selection. First, we explore natural selection through a case study of peppered moths. Some students asked for the link to that simulation: http://peppermoths.weebly.com/http://peppermoths.weebly.com/

Then, we modeled natural selection by playing a game. We found that over three generations, students with “long tails” were nearly wiped out; short tails have a survival advantage when running away from predators! Tomorrow, we will continue to think about natural selection in the context of the immune system.
