Summer SAVY 2016 (Session 2, Day 1) – Scripting Stories
For the first day of class, we started by getting to know each other. We began with a name game in which students said their name, an activity that they enjoy doing that begins with the first letter of their name, and a gesture to represent their activity. We went in a circle and learned everyone’s names through their activities and gestures. After learning names, we transitioned into our very first script adaptation project. We read the story of “Goldilocks and the Three Bears” aloud, then worked as a class on breaking the story down into its essential elements: character, scenes, and settings. Then the class split up into small groups and worked on their own adaptations. We discussed the freedom to take creative license with an adaptation and the students embraced the idea! Our class wrote four new script adaptations of the classic fairy tale: “Goldilocks and the Three Royal Bears,” “Immortal Locks and the Three Gods,” “Goldilocks and the Three Bears and Three Tigers,” and “Goldilocks and the Three Sisters.” Each group presented their script to the rest of the class as audience. We wrapped up by discussing our project for tomorrow: Each student will come in with a story to adapt into a new script!
