Summer SAVY 2016 (Session 1, Day 4) – Playing with Words
Today we looked at using words to form analogies. Drawing random items from our Gab Bag, one of your young authors said, “Writing is like keys because it unlocks a door to a whole new world!” Another said, “Writing is like sunglasses, because we can see shades of things in different ways.” And another said, “Writing is like a stethoscope because we can use it to tell what is in our heart!!”
These young writers are impressive. As we introduced and explored metaphors today, they could grasp the difference between a simile and a metaphor, identify them in poetry and prose, and appreciate the value figurative language adds to a story. Here’s a catchy tune to help us distinguish between simile and metaphor. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uoSBVNUO2LU We enjoyed using one of our adjectives about ourselves, writing a simile about it, then transposing that into a metaphor. Today was a synthesis of all the figurative language we explored so far this week. I was thrilled when we were reading the book Hurricane, and your young authors spontaneously began excitedly identifying the various figurative language they heard! These writers are developing a full treasure chest to enrich their writing and expand their enjoyment of reading.
SAVY courses offer discovery-based instruction with advanced content, 2-3 years ahead of grade level. We also teach at a pace that is as quick as a wink. Your young students have attended, absorbed, applied, and engaged beautifully this week. It is truly a joy learning with them. I hope you can join us tomorrow for our Open House, 9:00-9:30, Murray – 3rd floor. Thank you for choosing to let SAVY be a part of your summer.
