Vanderbilt Pre-College 2026 Summer Positions

All individuals expressing interested in PTY positions must be at least 18-years-old. Two years experience working or volunteering with youth, is preferred but not required, for most positions.

There is no deadline to submit interest in Vanderbilt Pre-College positions. Statements of interest will continue to be accepted until all positions are filled. You can express interest in multiple positions. We are unable to provide sponsorship of an employment VISA at this time.

Vanderbilt Pre-College 2026 Summer Position Descriptions
  • Residential Staff: Residential Staff serve as student facing staff who live in Vanderbilt Residence Halls with students. Each Proctor (undergraduate & graduate students) leads a group of 8-14 students while Area Coordinators (graduate students & professionals) serve as floor leaders who lead and coach Proctors.
Pre-College Area Coordinator (Multiple Openings)

Location: Nashville, TN
Type: Residential
Reports to: Director of Pre-College Programs

Job Description:  

A Pre-College Area Coordinator serves as an in-residence floor leader and supervisor. At Vanderbilt Pre-College, residential small groups of middle and high school students, are led by proctors. Each proctor is responsible for activities, check ins, and is first line support for students. The Area Coordinator (AC) serves as “a proctor for the proctors” by providing support and supervision to proctors and serves as the bridge between proctors and the leadership team. Area Coordinators reside in the residential hall with students and staff. This is a residential position that requires flexible weekend hours on Check-in/Check-out Days and during the weekends of program operation. 50-60 hours per week is typical, including weekend shifts. Flexibility is essential in this position.

Expectations: 

Within their wide array of duties and responsibilities, Pre-College Area Coordinators are expected to: 

  • Supervise Pre-College Proctors in all aspects of their roles.  
  • Grow and maintain Residential Proctor morale and performance through routine group and 1:1 meetings and conversations.  
  • Ensure the quality and effectiveness of nightly proctor meetings as well as filling in to lead these meetings as needed. 
  • Possess cultural sensitivity awareness and a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Lead an initial Floor Group Meeting for students on the opening night of each session to set clear standards and policies.
  • In partnership with the Head of Activities, serve as lead of various evening activities.
  • Possess strong organizational and communication skills along with proven problem-solving abilities. 
  • Handle unexpected student issues, including but not limited to: student illness, violations of stated community code of conduct, student support and encouragement, and the like. 
  • Be highly mature and able to assist with the management of a residential community of a summer academic program for teens. 
  • Brainstorm, with proctors, ideas for working with students who may be struggling academically, socially, emotionally, physically, or otherwise, referring to the leadership team as needed. 
  • Meet regularly with the leadership team and provide information and ideas for maintaining a positive and healthy community of students and staff. 
  • Engage willingly as a team player with humor, enthusiasm and a compassionate understanding of middle and high school academically advanced students as well as the proctors and other staff members who support them. 
  • Enthusiastically adapt and pivot as needed to ensure optimal, engaging, and safe student experiences.  
  • Assume other program related responsibilities as assigned by administrative staff. 
  • Work closely with other team members to accomplish program goals and address problems in a timely and effective manner. 
  • Uphold all expectations for proctor roles and responsibilities. 
  • Exemplify Vanderbilt Pre-College’s purpose, identify and communicate the cornerstones of a respectful residential and academic community and serve as a role model for all staff and students.

Qualifications:  

The ideal candidate will:  

  • Possess at least a bachelor’s degree.  
  • Have extensive residential life and/or summer program experience at the secondary school or college level.
  • Have extensive leadership and/or team building experience. 
  • Be able to live in the summer residence hall with students and proctor staff. 
  • Demonstrate exceptional maturity and character.  
  • Have experience communicating with parents or key stakeholders of an organization.  
  • Embody a strong team player ethic and sense of humor. 
  • Be able to successfully and positively communicate with individuals of all ages, experiences, and roles. 
  • Successfully pass the Vanderbilt University criminal background check and online training for working with minors.
  • Agree to adhere to all duties before, during, and after the program as outlined in the staff materials.
  • Must be able to traverse distances of at least one mile, including stairs, with or without accommodation.

$20.00/hr (plus housing and meals while Vanderbilt Pre-College is in session)

Program Dates and Times:*

  • The typical standard weekday shift is 6:30am-8:30am and 2:30pm-11pm in addition to extensive weekend hours. Please note that hours may vary slightly depending on session assignments. Area Coordinators work 1-2 hours each morning in supervising the residential halls as students wake up as well as escorting students to breakfast. 
  • Please note, Vanderbilt Pre-College requires all residential staff to live in the residence hall. This means all staff are expected to remain in the residence hall overnight for each and every night of assigned session with the exception of agreed upon 24-hour time-off periods (applicable only to VSI 2-week sessions). These 24-hour time off periods will be clearly communicated at the onset of each session; they will be different for each staff member in order to maintain the correct adult to student ratios that are in compliance with Vanderbilt University’s Protection of Minors policies.

Job Description:  

A Proctor serves as an in-residence counselor and leader for a group of 8-14 middle through high school students during Vanderbilt Pre-College, a residential program on Vanderbilt campus that serves academically advanced students. Through leading creative and meaningful evening activities, facilitating daily team-building and intentionally cultivating community, Proctors are critical to enhancing the academic and social experience for students. This is a residential position that requires flexible weekend hours on Check-in/Check-out Days and during the weekends of program operation. 45-55 hours weekly is typical. Flexibility is essential in this position.

Job Description:

The Head of Residential Logistics is fully responsible for managing data and operations associated with Vanderbilt Pre-College residential systems. This may include creating housing assignments, managing SWAG inventory and distribution, developing and printing student nametags, creating certificates of completion and other administrative tasks. This position may collaborate with other teams such as the Head(s) of Operations and Vanderbilt Office of Conferences and Events. This is primarily a non-student facing position and many tasks will be done independently.

Within their wide array of duties and responsibilities, the Pre-College Head of Residential Logistics is expected to:

  • Develop a strategic plan for managing multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Collaborate with various entities within Vanderbilt Pre-College to complete projects and support students.
  • Work closely with Director of Pre-College Programs to accomplish various goals to ensure Pre-College is successful.
  • Be comfortable working with various programs and systems such as Excel, Teams, Outlook, etc.
  • Be highly mature and able to assist with the management of a residential community for a summer academic program for teens.
  • Enthusiastically adapt and pivot as needed to ensure optimal, engaging, and safe student experiences.
  • Assist the Head(s) of Student Support with emergency medical visits to urgent care or the hospital as needed.
  • Be willing to complete driving requirements in order to operate a university designated vehicle.
  • Work closely with other leadership team members to accomplish program goals and address problems in a timely manner.
  • Uphold and enforce all program and University rules as outlined in staff and student handbooks.

Job Description:  

The Pre-College Head of Activities is responsible for designing and overseeing developmentally appropriate and engaging student activities and ensuring the efficient implementation of all student events and activities throughout the summer. Supervising a team of Activity Assistants and working closely with residential staff, the Head of Activities plans, schedules and implements both choice-based and all group events that align with Vanderbilt Pre-College’s mission and values.

Pre-College Activities Assistant (Multiple Openings)
Vanderbilt Pre-College Activities Assistant

Job Description:  

A Vanderbilt Pre-College Activities Assistant serves as an event planner for Pre-College residential activities. Through facilitating and supporting diverse activities, Activities Assistants are critical to enhancing the social experience of Pre-College students. Activities Assistants primarily serve in pivotal support roles in planning, developing, and executing residential experiences that ensure optimal student experience and provide high quality activity implementation. This is not a student facing role. This position requires flexible weekend hours on Check-in/Check-out Days and during the weekends of program operation.

  • Operations: Pre-College Operations Staff (graduate students & professionals) serve as the Pre-College nerve center and are responsible for internal/external communications, medication distribution, health logs and the optimal operation of the Pre-College office. Please note the Operations Team works, at times, on days in which all other staff are off in order to provide customer service to Pre-College families.

Multiple shifts will be hired for this position. 

Job Description:  

The Pre-College Head of Operations oversees all office and internal logistics of Pre-College programming and develops structured and efficient processes to ensure program success. Leading a team of program assistants, the Head of Operations manages the Vanderbilt Pre-College Summer Office which serves as the central hub for all internal and external program communication, inventory control, student medication processes and transportation scheduling. Serving as the initial point of contact for parent concerns and questions, the Head of Operations’s team will demonstrate elite customer service leading to efficient response and resolution metrics. This position that requires flexible weekend hours on Check-in/Check-out Days and during the weekends of program operation.

This involves continually auditing student airport flight times, communicating with students and parents about changed transportation plans, assigning shuttle times and ensuring the successful implementation of all transportation plans. This is a position that requires extreme attention to detail and the flexibility to work long hours on check-in and check-out days. Due to the long hours on check-in and check-out days, this position will have two days off in the middle of each session week.

Job Description:  

The Program Assistant position is a pivotal position within the Pre-College summer office staff, responsible for managing a variety of tasks essential to Pre-College operations. The work of the Program Assistant ensures that day-to-day operations run smoothly for all Vanderbilt Pre-College parties, including residential life programming, academic and classroom requests, parent questions and concerns, and student needs. 

Individual tasks and assignments will vary according to strengths, schedules, and interests of each Program Assistant, but general responsibilities include establishing a friendly and professional point of contact in the Pre-College office, directing calls, managing medication procedures, monitoring supply and equipment inventory, and assisting with all Check-in/Check-out procedures.  

Additionally, the Program Assistant serves as a mature presence to Pre-College students and staff in the Pre-College Office. Program Assistants will work closely with each other and all members of residential life to form a team of individuals dedicated to fostering a safe and supportive residential community that prioritizes student wellbeing. This is a non-residential position. Pre-College Program Assistants generally work 6-8 hour shifts (Sun-Sat) that could be scheduled for morning, afternoon or evening.   • Liaise between academic and residential life through facilitating effective communication across multiple program areas.

  • Assist with various administrative duties and processes to ensure smooth operations.

Qualifications:  

The ideal candidate will:  

  • Be a current undergraduate student, graduate student, or a professional.
  • Demonstrate exceptional maturity and character.  
  • Have experience working within an office or customer service intensive role.  
  • Have experience communicating with parents or key stakeholders of an organization.  
  • Embody a strong team player ethic and sense of humor. 
  • Be able to successfully and positively communicate with individuals of all ages, experiences, and roles. 
  • Successfully pass the Vanderbilt University criminal background check and online training for working with minors.
  • Agree to adhere to all duties before, during, and after the program as outlined in the staff materials.
  • Must be able to traverse distances of at least one mile, including stairs, with or without accommodation.
  • Must be able to lift and/or maneuver at least 40 lbs. with or without accommodation.

Compensation:

$16.00/hr (Non-Residential)
$12.00/hr (Residential; Housing and Meals provided)

*This position is eligible for the returning PTY seasonal staff incentive.
**This position is eligible for the Master’s Degree/ Educator or Counselor Certification incentive.
