PTY Special Projects Team 2026 Summer Positions

PTY Special Projects Team is a branch of programs within Vanderbilt's Programs for Talented Youth that supports our special partnerships and collaboration with other programs, departments, and foundations. In 2026, Special Projects will host the three-week immersive academic and residential program for rising 12th grade scholars known as "Young Scholars Senior Summit at PTY" in partnership with the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation. 

All individuals expressing interested in PTY positions must be at least 18-years-old. Two years experience working or volunteering with youth, is preferred but not required, for most positions.

There is no deadline to submit interest in PTY Special Projects positions. Statements of interest will continue to be accepted until all positions are filled. You can express interest in multiple positions. We are unable to provide sponsorship of an employment VISA at this time.

PTY Special Projects Team 2026 Summer Position Descriptions

  • Residential Staff: Residential Staff serve as student facing staff who live in Vanderbilt Residence Halls with students and support the needs of students and support the health of the overall student-life community. Each Proctor (undergraduate & graduate students) leads a group of 8-14 students while Area Coordinators (graduate students & professionals) serve as floor leaders who lead and coach Proctors. The Head of Student Care & Well Being will support and lead the residential team to support the social-emotional needs of Senior Summit Students.
  • Senior Summit Head of Student Care & Well Being (FILLED)

    Senior Summit Head of Student Care & Well Being

    Job Description:

    Reporting to the Manager of Special Projects, the Head of Student Care & Wellbeing takes responsibility for supporting the community health to maintain a positive social, emotional, and physiological health of Senior Summit Scholars. This position is multi-faceted and will require candidates to be flexible and work in a dynamic, ever-changing environment while managing multiple tasks. Responsible for nurturing and shaping a strong and welcoming environment to support the overall experience of all Senior Summit students. This position will also coach/mentor Area Coordinators, lead and facilitate trainings with staff, and serve as the Lead on Duty during evening and weekend shifts. One of the primary responsibilities of this position is to intake, process, and facilitate care for the Student of Concern Forms submitted by Special Projects staff members throughout the program. This role will include taking lead in the following areas: Student Allergy Support, Accessibility, Medication Distribution, Student Morale, Residential Logistics, Staff Morale, Student Behavioral Support, etc.

    Within their wide array of duties and responsibilities, the Head of Student Care & Well Being is expected to:

    • Manage the intake and dissemination of Student of Concern Forms to appropriate staff members.
    • Serve as a resource to students who may need extra guidance when dealing with any of the following issues: personal, academic, relational, social, or interpersonal.
    • Support and encourage students struggling with anxiety, homesickness, making friends, adapting to the program, etc.
    • Handle unexpected student concerns, including but not limited to: student illness, violations of the PTY community code of conduct, anxiety attacks, etc.
    • Establish an environment of support for staff and students.
    • Serve as a resource to area coordinators, residential proctors, and academic proctors on how to properly support students in their groups/classes.
    • Empower academic and residential staff to engage with their students in respectful, meaningful, and thoughtful ways.
    • Facilitate communication among various staff members to support the student experience.
    • Work closely with other leadership team members to accomplish program goals and address concerns in a timely manner.
    • Check in with students regularly who were referred to Student Support or have written support plans.
    • Support Students who go to the clinic/hospital for illness or physiological symptoms based on the recommendation of the PTY Nurse.
    • Master PTY policies concerning medication intake (check-in) and distribution/logging, OTC medication distribution, health log processing and hospital/clinic visit procedures.
    • Master SchoolDoc systems and processes including the EMAR and Health Log.
    • Collaborate with PTY nurses and Program Assistants when supporting students with health concerns.
    • Develop accessibility accommodations and strategies for students/staff who have limited mobility or have shown difficulty participating in PTY activities.
    • Be willing to complete driving requirements in order to operate a university designated vehicle.
    • Must be familiar with the responsibilities of being a mandatory reporter.

    Qualifications:

    The following is required:
    • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
    • Must be over 21 years old.
    • 2-5 years of experience working with children/teens in a full-time professional capacity (previous PTY or Residential experience will be considered).
    • Must be a self-starter and able to lead with little direction.
    • Have experience communicating with parents or key stakeholders of an organization (both verbally and in writing).
    • Be able to successfully and positively communicate with individuals of all ages, experiences, and roles.
    • Must be able to traverse distances of at least one mile, including stairs, with or without accommodation.
    • Must be able to lift and/or maneuver at least 40 lbs. with or without accommodation.
    • Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record. Vanderbilt University engages a third party to provide continuous up-to-date notifications regarding negative changes to motor vehicle records.
    The following is preferred:
    • Be a certified education professional (school counselor, teacher, school leadership team member, etc.).
    • Possess or be pursuing a Master’s degree in education, school counseling, social work, psychology, higher education, student affairs, etc.
    • Previous experience as an RA, Area Coordinator or residential staff at a university or camp.

    Compensation:

    $26.00/hr or $22.00/hr if residential. Residential preferred.

  • Senior Summit Area Coordinator (Two Positions)

    Senior Summit Area Coordinator


    Location: Nashville, TN
    Type: Residential
    Reports to: Head of Student Care & Well Being

    Job Description:

    A Special Projects Area Coordinator serves as an in-residence floor leader and supervisor. Residential small groups of 8-14 high school students are led by residential proctors. Each proctor is responsible for activities, check ins, and is first line support for students. The Area Coordinator (AC) serves as “a proctor for the proctors” by providing support and supervision to proctors and serves as the bridge between proctors and the leadership team. Area Coordinators reside in the residential hall with students and staff. This is a residential position that requires flexible weekend hours on Check-in/Check-out Days and during the weekends of program operation. 50-60 hours per week is typical, including weekend shifts. Flexibility is essential in this position.

    Within their wide array of duties and responsibilities, Area Coordinators are expected to:

    • Supervise Special Projects Proctors in all aspects of their roles.
    • Grow and maintain Residential Proctor morale and performance through routine group and 1:1 meetings and conversations.
    • Ensure the quality and effectiveness of nightly proctor meetings as well as filling in to lead these meetings as needed.
    • Lead an initial Floor Group Meeting for students on the opening night of each session to set clear standards and policies.
    • In partnership with the Head of Activities, serve as lead of various evening activities.
    • Handle unexpected student issues, including but not limited to: student illness, violations of stated community code of conduct, student support and encouragement, and the like.
    • Brainstorm, with proctors, ideas for working with students who may be struggling academically, socially, emotionally, physically, or otherwise, referring to the leadership team as needed.
    • Uphold all expectations for proctor roles and responsibilities.
    • Meet regularly with the leadership team and provide information and ideas for maintaining a positive and healthy community of students and staff.
    • Be highly mature and able to assist with the management of a residential community of a summer academic program for teens. Be willing to complete driving requirements in order to operate a university designated vehicle.

    Qualifications:

    The ideal candidate will:

    • Possess at least a bachelor’s degree.
    • Have extensive residential life and/or summer program experience at the secondary school or college level.
    • Have extensive leadership and/or team building experience.
    • Possess strong organizational and communication skills along with proven problem-solving abilities.
    • Be able to live in the summer residence hall with students and proctor staff.
    • Have experience communicating with parents or key stakeholders of an organization.
    • Be able to successfully and positively communicate with individuals of all ages, experiences, and roles.
    • Must be able to traverse daily distances of at least one mile, including stairs, with or without accommodation.
    • Must be able to lift and/or maneuver at least 40 lbs. with or without accommodation.

    Compensation:

    $20.00/hr (plus housing and meals while Vanderbilt Pre-College is in session)

    Program Dates and Times:*

    The typical standard weekday shift is 6:30am-8:30am and 2:30pm-11pm in addition to extensive weekend hours. Please note that hours may vary slightly depending on session activities. Area Coordinators work 1-2 hours each morning in supervising the residential halls as students wake up as well as escorting students to breakfast.

    Please note, Vanderbilt Special Projects requires all residential staff to live in the residence hall. This means all staff are expected to remain in the residence hall overnight for each and every night of assigned session with the exception of agreed upon 24-hour time-off periods. These 24-hour time off periods will be clearly communicated at the onset of the session; they will be different for each staff member in order to maintain the correct adult to student ratios that are in compliance with Vanderbilt University’s Protection of Minors policies.

  • Senior Summit Residential Proctor (Multiple Openings)

    Senior Summit Residential Proctor

    Job Description:

    A Proctor serves as an in-residence counselor and leader for a group of 8-14 high school students during Senior Summit, a residential program on Vanderbilt campus that serves academically advanced students. Through leading creative and meaningful evening activities, facilitating daily team-building and intentionally cultivating community, Proctors are critical to enhancing the academic and social experience for students. Proctors will lead their small group of students through daily gatherings, will ensure risk management and student supervision ratios are intact, and will encourage positive engagement within the Senior Summit activities and community. This is a residential position that requires flexible weekend hours on Check-in/Check-out Days and during the weekends of program operation. 45-55 hours weekly is typical. Flexibility is essential in this position.

    • Lead, supervise, continually check-in and support a group of 8-14 high school students throughout the session.
    • Curate a safe, cordial, and supportive residential community for all students and staff.
    • Co-create and implement age-appropriate and unforgettable recreational activities.
    • Collaborate with other Proctors to ensure a positive community culture.
    • Remain in frequent communication with the leadership team regarding student well being and engagement.
    • Assist with various administrative duties and processes to ensure smooth operations. Liase between the proctor group and leadership team regarding student needs, ideas, concerns, and wishes.

     

    Qualifications:

    The ideal candidate will:

    • Be a current undergraduate or graduate student.
    • Have experience working with teenagers in a youth development setting. (Residential life/camp counseling experience a plus).
    • Be able to successfully and positively communicate with individuals of all ages, experiences, and roles.
    • Must be able to traverse distances of at least one mile, including stairs, with or without accommodation.

  • Academic Operations: The PTY Special Projects Academic Operations team will facilitate the successful implementation of academically rigorous courses for Senior Summit students. Led by the Head of Academic Operations (professional), and supported by the Academic Program Assistant (undergraduate or graduate student), the team of Academic Proctors (undergraduate students and graduate students) will support the operations and logistics of the academic experiences for scholars.

    Job Description:

    The Head of Academic Operations oversees the logistical and risk management components of the Special Projects classroom experience. In supervising the Academic Proctors and an Academic Program Assistant, this position is responsible for a variety of pre-program and in-program objectives including but not limited to: designing and leading trainings, in-program communication with Academic Proctors concerning schedules and policy compliance, managing academic field trips and implementing contingency plans as needed.

  • Senior Summit Academic Program Assistant

    Senior Summit Academic Program Assistant

    Job Description:

    The Academic Program Assistant position is a pivotal position within the Special Projects Academic Operations team, responsible for supporting a variety of tasks essential to the Special Projects academic experience. The work of the Academic Program Assistant ensures that day-to-day academic operations run smoothly for all Special Projects parties, including meal procedures, logistics, and student needs. Academic Program Assistants also serve as substitute Academic Proctors and cover shifts as needed. Please note that Special Projects classrooms are spread out across a large campus and Academic Program Assistants walk between classes throughout the academic day.

    The Academic Proctor supports the Special Projects academic experience through supporting logistical, risk management and scheduling aspects of the Special Projects classroom. Academic Proctors begin each day by supervising students at breakfast and are responsible for all building to building transitions throughout the academic day. In working with Special Projects Leadership, Academic Proctors support all student needs as they arise as well as ensure that all risk management policies are being followed. Academic Proctors may also assist with airport logistics during arrival and/or dismissal, as well as assist with Saturday mornings. Additional optional weekend hours supporting activities may also be available. Academic Proctors are not expected to have context knowledge related to the courses they are assigned and are not responsible for any instructional aspects of courses.

    • Support operations and logistics regarding residential program including but not limited to laundry, student linens dispersement, and SWAG distribution.
    • Maintain an organized and efficient system of monitoring program supplies and inventory.
    • Assist with various administrative duties and processes to ensure smooth operations.
    • Assist with the set up, take down, and implementation of various program events, supporting academics, activities, and operations.
    • Serve as a proctor substitute, as needed.

    Qualifications:

    The ideal candidate will:

    • Be a current undergraduate student, graduate student, or a professional.
    • Be able to successfully and positively communicate with individuals of all ages, experiences, and roles.
    • Have experience in a complex office setting or in a setting requiring diverse logistics implementation.
    • Thrive in a flexible environement where each day comes with new tasks and opportunities for collaboration.
    • Must be able to traverse distances of at least one mile, including stairs, with or without accommodation.
    • Must be able to lift and/or maneuver at least 40 lbs. with or without accommodation.

    Compensation:

    $16.00/hr (Non-Residential)
     
    $12.00/hr (Residential; Housing and Meals provided)

    **This position is eligible for the Master’s Degree/ Educator or Counselor Certification incentive.

    Program Dates and Times:*

    • 5 hours weekly beginning mid-June
    • During program dates (July 6 - 24) the typical weekday shift is 2:30pm-9:30pm in addition to flexible weekend hours. Student arrival and dismissal day shifts TBA.

  • Academics: PTY Academic Instructors (graduate students, faculty & professionals) design and implement course curricula to meet the intellectual needs of advanced students. The Academic Team supports the planning and facilitation of courses through the Instructional Coaches roles (multiple positions, professionals), and manages the purchasing, organizing, and distribution of course materials through the Materials Manager/Program Assistants (multiple positions, undergraduate/graduate students).
