GENERAL QUESTIONS

  • Is Vanderbilt PTY through Vanderbilt University?

    Programs for Talented Youth (PTY) is a unit housed within Peabody College at Vanderbilt University.

  • How many staff work at PTY? What is the Special Projects staffing structure?

    Programs for Talented Youth hires over 150 seasonal staff members to work in various capacities including both residential and non-residential positions, K-12. In 2026, the Special Projects staff will include an academic team, operations team, activities team, and residential life team. In total, the Special Projects 2026 team will include around 23 team members. 

  • Do I need to be a Vanderbilt student to work at Vanderbilt Pre-College?

    You do not need to be a Vanderbilt student to apply for PTY Special Projects positions.

  • What will Staff Training include? How long is Staff Training? Is it paid?

    Staff Training is paid and meals are provided during training sessions. The overall goal of staff training is that staff are able to build community and connection with each other while also learning essential information to successfully complete their role with confidence. Staff Training is generally about 5 days long. The training sessions cover a variety of topics to ensure that staff feel prepared and understand their role.

  • What should staff wear? (During training and during the program)

    PTY Special Projects team members can wear casual and comfortable clothes during both training and during the program. Staff should keep in mind that many roles include walking. Additionally, some staff, based on job responsibilities, many be involved in event set up and/or participation/supervision in recreational activities.

    We ask staff to refrain from wearing clothing with logos that are offensive or advertise adult beverages or illegal drugs as positions work with minors and parents of minors. On specific days, staff will be asked to wear PTY provided shirts.

  • Are meals provided?

    Meals are provided during staff training and during the program sessions. For residential staff, breakfast, lunch, and dinner are provided. For non-residential staff, one meal is typically provided per scheduled shift. A detailed meal schedule is provided to staff before the start of the summer.

  • Do you accommodate dietary restrictions?

    PTY Special Projects works with Vanderbilt Dining to accommodate dietary restrictions for students and staff. 

  • How many hours a week can I expect to work?

    Typical hours worked differ by position. If you are interested in learning more about typical hours for a certain position, please email vsa.pty@vanderbilt.edu.

  • I’ve worked at a summer camp before in which I was expected to be available 24 hours a day. Is it the same with Senior Summit?

    Typical daily shifts are included in each role’s job description on the job description page.

    Please note: Residential staff are required to stay on their residential hall from students’ lights out time until breakfast. During this time, residential staff are asked to answer their door in the rare event a Senior Summit student has an emergency and needs them. Senior Summit students are provided other information about reaching out to leadership in the event of an emergency to avoid residential staff on the hall being interrupted unless absolutely necessary. In the event a staff member is off the clock but is asked to support a student, the staff member will compensated for their additional time.

  • Do I get breaks?

    Staff who work are assigned a shift of over 6 hours receive a 30-minute, uninterrupted break.

  • Can I have other jobs while working at Vanderbilt Pre-College? Can I take classes while working at Vanderbilt Pre-College?

    Vanderbilt student workers are not able to have other hourly on-campus employment while working at PTY Special Projects. Vanderbilt student workers and VTS (non-Vanderbilt) employees are encouraged not to have employment outside of VU employment or take classes during the summer that could interfere with the flexible hours needed during program dates.

  • Can working at Vanderbilt Pre-College count for an internship requirement?

    Yes. If you are interested in working at Vanderbilt Special Projects to fulfill an internship requirement, please inform Manager of Special Projects as soon as possible after you are hired.

  • Can current Vanderbilt international students work at Vanderbilt Pre-College?

    Yes. We encourage all VU international students to contact Vanderbilt Student & Scholar Services (https://www.vanderbilt.edu/isss/) if they have questions about summer employment.

  • Will I get to know staff on other teams during the program?

    Yes! Due to the small and nimble staff structure at PTY Special Projects, each member of the PTY Special Projects team will have opportunities to connect with other members of the Special Projects team. Roles within the same team or work channel will inherently have greater overlap and therefore have greater opportunities for connection and collaboration. 

  • Can I have visitors on campus?

    Visitors to residential staff members are not allowed in the residence hall or at any group social event unless approved in advance by the program director. All staff members must always honor the Protection of Minors policy. At no time should residential staff members host overnight visitors in their rooms, even when Pre-College students are not present.

  • Do staff receive SWAG?

    Yes, staff receive will receive some SWAG items.

  • How do I log my hours?

    PTY Senior Summit staff will submit their hours through UKG (Kronos). More information can be found at https://hr.vanderbilt.edu/compensation/payroll/timesheet-faqs.php.

LEADERSHIP TEAM SPECIFIC QUESTIONS

  • Who is on the Special Projects Leadership Team?

    The Leadership Team consists of the Head of Academic Operations, Head of Activities, Head of Operations & Communications, Head of Student Care & Wellbeing, and Area Coordinators in addition to the Manager of Special Projects. Three Program Assistants are also a part of the Special Projects Admin Team. 

  • Is there additional training for the Leadership Team?

    Yes. There is some additional training for Area Coordinators. In addition, the Head leadership roles require limited spring training, onboarding and work.

  • Does the Leadership Team receive housing?

    Housing is role specific. Please visit the job description for a specific position for more information.

RESIDENTIAL STAFF SPECIFIC QUESTIONS

  • What is a typical schedule for a residential staff team member?

    Schedules are role specific. Please see the job description for the role you are interested in on the Special Projects job descriptions page on the PTY website.

  • What is housing like for residential staff? Do I have my own room?

    Residential staff will have their own room and will be assigned to a designated floor and residence hall. The residence halls have communal style bathrooms. We will designate one for staff to use and the other(s) will be available for student use.

  • Can I move in the residential hall early or store my items in a residential hall before I arrive?

    No. PTY Special Projects does not have access to residential halls before the scheduled move-in day or after the scheduled move-out day. PTY is unable to provide space to store items before or after the program.

  • Which residential hall will we be using for the program?

    While subject to change, we intend for the 2026 Senior Summit program to reside within Cole Hall. 

  • How do restrooms/showers on residential hall floors work for staff?

    On each floor, restrooms/showers are designated as either student or staff. There are approximately 2-6 staff on each hall. 

  • Do I have access to laundry?

    Yes. While not within Cole Hall, all students and scholars will have access to a designated laundry facility on campus, near Cole Hall. The laundry facilities are free to use and do not require cash or change to operate the machines. Laundry detergent/etc. is not provided.

  • Where can residential staff get meals when not on the clock?

    Pre-College meals will be primarily available in the Rand Dining Center.

    In addition to the dining hall, there are a variety of eateries within walking distance from the residential halls if staff members would like to eat off campus at their own expense while not on the clock.

ACADEMIC PROCTOR SPECIFIC QUESTIONS

  • Do I need to know anything about the subject matter of Senior Summit classes to serve as an Academic Proctor?

    No. The Academic Proctor supports the academic experience through supporting logistical, risk management and scheduling aspects of the Senior Summit classroom. Academic Proctors are not expected to know or support content delivery.

  • Do I need to be available for all program dates of Senior Summit?

    Academic Proctors should be available all weekdays and Saturdays within the program session dates (July 6 - 24, 2026) but are not required to work on Sundays. 

  • Do I need to have experience working with high school students?

    While previous experience working with high school students is preferred, it is not required.
